Atlantic Bluefin Tuna

Seamax Wild-caught Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (lat. Thunnus thynnus), one of the rarest and most expensive of the tuna species, has a delicious, meaty flavor and a sumptuous texture akin to rare filet mignon. The deep red flesh is extremely popular for sushi and sashimi. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, known for their anti-inflammatory properties, as well as a unique form of selenium called selenoneine, a powerful antioxidant.

The Atlantic Bluefin tuna makes extensive migrations and can grow to immense size, easily reaching lengths of 2 m (6.5 ft.) and weighing up to 250 kg (550 lbs.). With metallic blue on its back and a shimmering silver-white on the underside, it is well-camouflaged from both above and below. Its streamlined, torpedo-shaped body is built for speed and endurance, and it can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h (43 mph). The genus name Thunnus originates from the Greek verb thuno, meaning “to rush.”

Its diet consists of squid, eel and crustaceans as well as schooling fish such as mackerel, flying fish, herring, whiting and mullet. During spawning, which occurs in spring and summer, a large female may shed over 25 million eggs. The Atlantic Bluefin has a lifespan of up to 20 years or more in the wild.
