Yellowfin Tuna

Seamax Wild-caught Yellowfin Tuna (lat. Thunnus albacares), named for its distinctive yellow dorsal fins, has a medium to mild flavor and very firm texture that makes it desirable for sushi and sashimi. Yellowfin Tuna is low in both saturated fat and sodium and is an excellent source of many trace minerals, including a unique form of selenium called selenoneine, a powerful antioxidant. It is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have proven anti-inflammatory effects.

Yellowfin tuna is found worldwide in both tropical and subtropical waters. It is built for speed and endurance, with its genus name Thunnus originating from the Greek verb thuno, meaning “to rush.” Its streamlined body is dark metallic blue on the back blending into yellow or silver on the belly, which is patterned with numerous broken lines. A vivid golden stripe runs along each side of the body from the eye to the tail.

Yellowfin tuna are relatively fast growing and have an average lifespan of 4 to 8 years. They can reach a length of up to 3 m (10 ft.) and weigh up to 400 kg (880 lbs.).
